Vice Prez Strikes a New Peace Deal Between Alavanyo And Nkonya
The Nkonyas and Alavanyos have been engaged in tribal conflicts from land disputes. However there seemed to be no imminent end to the dispute since all efforts by government and civil society groups to ensure lasting peace have proved futile.
Mostly, attempts to ensure peace have been marred in sporadic shootings.
The Vice President, in a meeting with the Chiefs and people of both communities, lamented the continuous expenditure of national resources in the volatile region as a result of the number of security officers deployed to the area, calling on them to ensure lasting peace since peace can be achieved if the two communities expressed continues and committed readiness.
It could be recall that in August 2014, an agreement was reached in Accra for the two communities to end the dispute but that agreement was disrupted on several occasions with the latest being New Year Day’s shooting, which saw many families flee their homes.
Police and military presence have been beefed up in the area with curfew imposed and renewed over time.
However, at the meeting the Chiefs of the two communities, Torgbe Tsedze Atakora VII of Alavanyo and Nana Okoto Kofi II of Nkonya have pledged their readiness to allow peace reign.
