The 1957 trip to Ghana that helped create the first global football superstar

Image
The Stanley Matthews football revolution made in Ghana Sir Stanley Matthews remains one of England's most famous footballers and was known as the Wizard of Dribble. But he was also arguably the first global icon, paving the way for superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. And it all began in Ghana, writes Scott Anthony. Football is the closest thing the planet has to a global popular culture. Wherever you go in the world, you'll find people kicking a ball around, watching matches in cafes, wearing replica shirts, and betting or playing football games on their phones. Unemployment forcing people into music - Ackah Blay

Image
Seasoned Ghanaian guitarist, Ackah Blay may be stoking controversy insisting that most musicians in Ghana do music out of frustration and not passion. According to him, some of the musicians pursue music because they are unemployed and they see music as the easy way out. He said this in an interview with Adom Entertainment News and explained that people get frustrated when they find it difficult to get jobs after school and some of them choose music as the next alternative. The ‘Take Away’ singer said that these musicians end up producing bad songs because they have little or no knowledge about music. “When they complete school and they do not get work to do, then they tell themselves 'let's venture into music' so they just enter the studio and end up coming out with substandard songs,” he emphasised. Ackah Blay, a former member of the Western Diamonds band, said that the situation can be corrected if music is included in school curriculum. When implemented,

Image
It seems while the number of male rappers in Ghana keeps soaring, that cannot be said of their female counterparts and this, according to Eno, Ghana’s best female rapper may be due to a couple of reasons. Eno believes that in addition to the female rappers not being consistent, they are also ‘discriminated’ against when it comes to renumeration. “I think the male dominated industry is not helping female rappers. We perform better than the guys but they are better paid. “ You see, when it comes to performances, so much go into it for us than our male counterparts. Our appearance has to be on point—hair, make-up etc but the industry is not helping female rappers,” she explained when she spoke with Showbiz on Wednesday. “ Also, here in Africa, artistes who sing make more money than those who rap so some of the female rappers switch to singing and that, I believe, could be a factor why there are very few female rappers.” “I don’t have a problem with those who switch to singing
